  • Home Again

Well this will be the last time I post from this blog site.

We returned home safely last night around 7ish.  It is great to be home.  We made some awesome memories and had a wonderful time.

Thanks to everyone who followed us around Europe and sent us well-wishes from home.

  • Rome by night...beautiful.  Melissa and I ended up doing the hop on, hop off bus and it was so worth it.  We did it once yesterday afternoon and then decided that it would look really cool at night, so we had an awesome Italian dinner and then hopped back on around 8.30.  Once again, we passed by sculptures and huge fountains.  Saw the colosseum light up, many ruins, beautiful  marble churches that towered in the sky, and the dwelling place of the president.  Today we are going to be moving to a different hostel, because it is closer to the airport, and then we have a tour to some villas of emperors outside the city.  Tomorrow, we are planning on a walking tour of the Colosseum and then take in, yet one more tour, which will be of the catacombs.  It is hard to believe that we only have three more days and then we will be home.  Love Rome and would actually like to have a few more days here, but I am also ready to come home and start with real life again.  Well, got to go get Melissa up.  See you all later.

  • I know I have said it before, and I will say it again... I love Rome!!!
I'm taking a few minutes in the afternoon to cool off and rest after a morning of sightseeing.  My feet are sore and I feel like a drowned rat- I'm so melted from the heat.  Krista is laying down with a headache and so I figured I would tell a little more about this morning:
We went our separate ways today as we both planned to see the Vatican City.  Whereas Krista wanted to explore on her own, I wanted to join a tour that would be commentated by a guide.  So I can only talk about my own experiences (while from the sound of hers were great too...)  Because we had toured so many other buildings and sites that I had not a clue what I was looking at, I didn't want to think... ah another basilica *sp.* or another tapestry or another painting.  Our tour guide was wonderful.  He was very informative, explaining all the details of the Sistine Chapel and interesting facts about St. Peters Basilica.  He showed us where the pope lives and where he makes his papal blessings.  It has been great to bring together things that I knew and things that I've learned and see the whole picture of the history of Rome.
I met a wonderful lady on this tour.  Like me, her friend chose to do something else for the morning so as two women alone in the tour, we hung with each other, discussing what we were seeing and taking pictures for each other.  (When you travel alone, even for just one tour, it is hard to get pictures of yourself, so it was nice for the both of us)
I loved hearing the story of Michelangelo and the two major artworks he commissioned within the Sistine Chapel/the ceiling and the Last Judgement.  It was interesting to see how he put his touch into the pieces of art.  The Last Judgement he painted when he was about 50 (I'm trying to remember these facts here so if I'm a bit off please forgive me) and within the painting he portrayed himself as just skin, a body without bones or muscles, because that is how he felt at the time.  He also painted the Pope who made him paint this in the lower right hand corner of the painting as one of the lost souls headed for hell.  One would not have wanted to tick Michelangelo off... for he might have portrayed you in a bad sense of his paintings.  Apparently he was a very unhappy and even unprepared man to paint these two spectacular works of art.
Unfortunately it was so much to take in at once.  My neck began to ache from tilting it back to look at the ceiling, I could only imagine what it must have been like painting this huge "canvas."  I was also a little disappointed too because for the past few days I have had to wear my glasses because my contacts have been bothering my eyes. (I think I scratched one of my eyes by rubbing it one day in France.. I've only been able to wear the contacts for  short periods of time since.) Two days ago I gave up on the idea completely and resigned to wearing my glasses to allow my eye time to heal... unfortunately though, my the prescription really needs to be updated.    Because of this, I was unable to clearly see all the details that we were told to watch out for.  Oh well, awesome just the same!
Alrighty, I think I will go wake Krista on the hopes that she is feeling better.  We planned to do an open-top, hop-on, hop-off bus tour of the city.
Caio amigos (ok... I know that is a combination of Italian and Spanish, but oh well) Siganaro! (and I am pretty sure that is not spelled right :o)

  • My toes hurt...if an elephant stepped on them, I wonder if they would kind of feel like this...in fact, I was thinking today, since I had to give my right arm to pay for internet in Ireland and had to sell my liver to pay for the gondola ride in Venice, is there a black market for toes as well?

This was the first day during the entire trip that both Melissa and I had any kind of feet trouble.  As she said in a previous blog, we went to Pompii and climbed Mount Vevisus (sp?) yesterday.  Pompii covered acres upon acres of land and varied from theators, to temples, to houses, to places of meetings.  This place was in existance and thriving over 2,000 years ago and to think that I walked the same steps as many of them has a bit of an awe factor to it.  After Pompii we took the bus to the volcano that destroyed the ancient city.  Our bus kept ascending higher and higher and turning one sharp turn after another.  He would usually lay on the horn as he went around and anyone who was in the way, had to get out of the way (which was fairly difficult seeing how the road was barely big enough for our bus to ride on).  Sometimes, I would see the summit and think, "there is no way that I am climbing that; if this bus does not go all the way up, I am going to let Melissa go up on her own."  After arriving however, I decided that this was a once in a lifetime oppertunity and I had to climb it.  The view made the trek up the rocky, hard to climb soil, worth the effort.  From the top, we could see the sprawling city of Naples and the sea beside it.

It took us a while to descend as well and by the time we got back to the hostel, it was close to 8:00.  We were exhausted, sweaty, filthy, and hungry.   We also still had to get packed for an early train to Rome.  It all worked out and we are now in a lovely hostel that has windows that actually open all the way (the ones in Naples didnt, making it stifling hot in our room at night, even though it was cool outside).  Rome rocks and we are looking forward to seeing the Vatican tomorrow.  Now, my bed is calling my name.  Talk to you all later.

  • Our last train ride today.  And as we were riding along, I began to think... our train ride in Ireland (on our way back to Shannon) and even flying coach on the airplanes home will feel like crap.  See we've had the special treatment of first class as we train from country to country.  Big comphy seats that recline a bit with plenty of legroom.  Becuase we bought our Eurail Passes together we received first class (ok actually when you buy the Global Pass like we did, you have no choice- but let me feel like a VIP)
Rome!  We're here.  And without problems finding our hostel too!  What an awesome city.  I love it.  So many awesome sites that we have taken in so far.  And so many more tomorrow.  Ok well I'm gonna say arrivederci and let Krista tell you some more about our travels.  Caio!

Hey Mel --- Sounds like you guys are having a great time. I find myself envious as you probably did when me and mom were in Austrailia. That and I'm always wondering where you are and what cool things your seeing. Everything is good around home. We are having a 90+ degree heat wave with lots of h
